Datuk Karunakaran was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Maybank Ageas Holdings Berhad on 1 March 2016.

He holds a Post Graduate Course in Industrial Project Planning from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Economics (Accounting) with Honours from the University of Malaya, Malaysia.

Datuk Karunakaran had served the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) for 36 years in various positions including a Director and Director-General. MIDA is responsible for the promotion and coordination of the development of the manufacturing and services sector in Malaysia including promoting domestic and foreign investments.

Within the Maybank Group, Datuk Karunakaran is currently the Chairman of Etiqa International Holdings Sdn Bhd and Maybank Singapore Ltd.

Besides the Maybank Group, Datuk Karunakaran is also the Chairman of ILB Group Berhad (formerly known as Integrated Logistics Berhad).
